Eugene Swing Dancers and Friends -
Next Monday (6/27) could be our FINAL DANCE EVER at Agate Hall. :(
The Eugene Swing Dance Club has received notice that we will no longer be able to use Agate Hall after July 1, 2011. The UO is planning close the hall to all community groups and only let ROTC, the Law School and the School of Journalism use the space. We need your help to change their minds. Here’s how to help:
1) Write letters to the president of UO Richard Lariviere, Karen Hyatt (UO Government and Community Relations), the Register Guard, the Oregon Daily Emerald, or Eugene Weekly stating why it would be a bad idea to close Agate Hall to community groups.
When writing to UO staff if you are a student or graduate of the UO, be sure to indicate that in your letter.

2) Invite your dancer friends to the facebook event so that other people know about this issue and can help. Invite them to view this website if they aren’t on facebook.
3) Post about this to your facebook status to help spread the word.
More details about the swing dance club that you might find useful in your letter:
The Eugene Swing Dance Club is well established at Agate Hall, and has been using the hall for about 15 years. We’ve researched other venues in town and are unable to find any other comparable facility. It would really be a shame to lose this space that is so convenient for UO students and community. Many other community groups use the hall as well and will also be impacted by this loss.
The UO needs to know how much this decision will affect the community. We serve all ages of community members. We promote a healthy, active, social lifestyle for students and community.
Check this out from the president’s web page:
“The University of Oregon is an international leader because of the faculty’s outstanding teaching and research. This institution plays a vital role in the educational, civic, social and economic health of the state of Oregon…”
—Richard Lariviere
He may not be aware of the negative impact this decision.
Our final dance ever at Agate Hall (6/27) will be a free dance!
